The Special
Investigations Unit is made up of three investigators. Their primary
responsibility is the investigation of narcotics and dangerous drugs. These
investigations include assisting the Uniform Patrol Division with the
recovery of illegal narcotics as well as the seizure of assets related to
illegal narcotics. Other duties include both covert and overt investigations
that result in the recovery of illegal and dangerous drugs and the arrest of
person(s) responsible for the distribution of the narcotics.
The Special
Investigations Unit has been in operation since October 1996. Since the
inception of the Special Investigations Unit over seven hundred pounds of
marijuana, five hundred grams of crack cocaine, over two kilos of powder
cocaine, and more than three hundred thousand dollars in assets have been
seized. There have been seizures of other illegal drugs as well, which
include LSD and pharmaceutical type narcotics.
Special
Investigations Unit members are currently assigned to work on a state police
Middle Peninsula Drug Task Force. The Task force is comprised of four
agencies: The Virginia State Police, the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Office,
the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office, and the York County Sheriff’s
Office.
