The Crime Prevention Unit currently oversees or is involved in the following Sheriff's Office Programs:
This program assist subdivisions in coordinating, and establishing a Neighborhood Watch Program. Assistance includes at least two presentations and ongoing technical assistance. Neighborhood E-mail Alert Program This program sends crime trend, crime line and other important information directly to neighborhoods throughout the county. Currently over 50 neighborhoods are signed up for the service. All emails are sent blocked carbon copy to help ensure your privacy. Email addresses will not be given, sold or used for any other reason except Sheriff's Office business. To sign up please click here. This program assist County Administration, Residents and Businesses owners combat graffiti on their property. Prevention recommendations and photographing graffiti for future prosecution is part of this program. This program gives away free gun locks to all county residents and employees who ask for them. To date almost 600 locks have been distributed. In conjunction with the D.A.R.E. Office the CPU fingerprints children at community events throughout the county. If you are interested in having your child done, please contact the Community Policing Office at 890-3653 or 890-3639. This program runs during the summer months at local elementary schools. We work the York County Fire and Life Safety and teach the Bike and Gun Safety portions of the Program. On a limited basis, Crime Analysis Support is given to County Administration, Sheriff's staff, citizens and future citizens on crime committed in York County. Business/Residential Security Surveys This program brings the crime prevention officer to your residence or business to look at your current security practices, procedures and building security and make recommendations that would reduce your chances of being a victim. In a partnership with the York County School Division, the Crime Prevention Officer, School Resource Officer and School administration walk the buildings and grounds of York County Schools and identify possible safety and security concerns. Recommendations are then given that would enhance safety and crime prevention. Coastguard Indoctrination Program This is a joint program with United State Coast Guard Base at Yorktown, It focus's on protecting the citizens of York County from victimization by USCG personnel and preventing USCG personal training in our area from breaking the law by educating them on Virginia laws as part of their training.
