Auxiliary Deputy Program |
 |
|
The Auxiliary
Program is commanded by a Lieutenant from the Uniform Patrol Division.
This program is capable of having up to ten auxiliary deputies at a time. All of auxiliary deputies have graduated form
the Tidewater Academy of Criminal Justice and are State Certified Patrol
Officers.
Auxiliary
Deputies go through the same training or basic law enforcement academy as a full
time law enforcement Deputy. The training consists of approximately 640 hours.
Once the academy training is completed the Deputy completes about 80 additional
hours of training with a Field Training Officer. After all training has been
completed they are sworn officers with full arrest powers and patrol duties.
Auxiliary deputies may patrol an area and answer calls for service, the same as
regular full time Deputies or ride with a full time deputy providing a two man
response to calls. The auxiliary academy is 4 days a week 6pm-10pm and some
Saturdays. The 640-hour requirement is new this year. The training used to
consist of 480 hours. With the additional hours of training it will take
approximately eight months to complete the academy. Some auxiliary officers may
have recently retired or had jobs that allowed them to attend the full time
police academy. In this case they may be able to complete the required schooling
in less time.
They are required
to work a minimum of twenty hours per month. The Auxiliary Deputy Sheriffs
currently meet once every other month to go over policies and procedures,
updated laws and court decisions, Firearms training, and other related programs.
