YORK COUNTY
 NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE YEAR AWARDS

2008 Winners

2007 Winners

BACKGROUND.  The York County Neighborhood of the Year awards program was initiated in 2002 following a request by several homeowner associations in the County.  One award is given in each of the following categories:

  • Beautification;
  • Neighborhood Cooperation and Spirit; and
  • Safety.

A nomination may be submitted for any Homeowner Association that has made a major improvement in the past 12 months in any of these three categories.  An association may submit an entry in more than one category, however, it can win only one category award in any one year.

NOMINATION PROCESSEvery spring (May/June), letters and nomination forms are mailed to each Homeowner Association’s point of contact informing them of the award procedure and deadline.  A reminder is mailed one month later, also containing a nomination form.  Submissions must be postmarked (or received via email) by the deadline indicated.  (NOTE:  Only those homeowner associations registered with the Public Information Office will receive nomination forms.  If your association is not registered, please call
(757)
890-3300 or email
piofc@yorkcounty.gov.)

JudgingThe County Administrator selects judges who demonstrate significant knowledge about the category (ex:  Beautification Coordinator selecting winner for Beautification category; York-Poquoson Sheriff determining a winner for Safety category; and so on).

Award PresentationOnce judging is complete, all competing neighborhoods are notified of the results.  The winning neighborhoods are asked to send representatives to receive their award at a pre-determined Board of Supervisors meeting.  At the meeting, the neighborhood representative will be asked to step forward and receive a framed plaque for placement in their clubhouse or other public area, and a large sign to be installed at an entrance to their community announcing their achievement (sign to be installed by each individual neighborhood).  The County will issue a press release to local media informing the public of the neighborhood achievements.

Examples of award-winning INITIATIVES per category.

  • Safety:  Crime Prevention (neighborhood watch program), traffic management, housing improvements, preparedness for hurricanes and other emergencies, prevention of stormwater damage, other environmental improvements, etc.

  • Beautification:  Litter control, landscape improvements (shrubs, flowers, green spaces, park areas), signage improvement, etc.

  • Community Cooperation and Spirit:  Social or cultural events, celebrations, group participation in civic affairs, newsletters, etc.
