SAFETY TOWN. A County-wide project designed to introduce and teach young children various aspects of life safety. Operated each summer for 4 and 5-year-olds that will attend kindergarten in the fall.  Telephone - (757) 890-3880.

SCHOOL BOARD. The York County School Board is an elected body of five citizens. Members serve terms of four years. Meetings are held on, typically, the fourth Monday of the month at 7p.m. in York Hall. They are televised live on Channel 47 and rebroadcast throughout the month. SENIOR CENTER OF YORK. A joint operations agreement between the County and the Peninsula Agency on Aging (PAA) and the dedication of citizen volunteers allows this Center to provide programming for senior citizens Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Center is located in Washington Square Shopping Center on George Washington Memorial Highway.  Telephone - (757) 898-3807.

SENIOR CITIZENS.

Peninsula Agency on Aging (PAA) offers services for senior citizens on the Peninsula. Located at 739 Thimble Shoals Blvd, Executive Office Center, Building 1000, Suite 1006, Newport News.  Telephone -

55 Alive/Mature Driving Refresher Courses are offered several times a year by York County Parks & Recreation and AARP. Those who complete the eight-hour, two-day course are eligible for reduced auto insurance rates from companies licensed to operate in Virginia. SENIOR CONNECTION. An information and referral service for concerns and issues that affect senior citizens.  A service of the Department of Community Services.  Telephone - (757) 890-3883.

SEPTIC SYSTEMS. The Health Department issues permits for wells and septic systems:
Lower York County - (757) 594-7300; and Upper York County - (757) 253-4813.

SHERIFF, YORK-POQUOSON. The Sheriff is in charge of law enforcement in York County. Serves as bailiff and civil process server for the County and Poquoson.

• Stop signs and other highway signs are the responsibility of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).  Telephone - (757) 253-4832.

SOCIAL SERVICES. York-Poquoson Social Services is a state supervised, locally administered agency funded with federal, state and local money.  Telephone - (757) 890-3787.

Child and Family Services - The major service programs offered are:

• Intake Services;

• Child Protective Services;

• Adult Protective Services;

• Family Services;

• Foster Care and Adoption Services;

• Custody Related Services such as parental evaluations and mediation services;

• Employment Services;

• Counseling;

• Day Care;

• Emergency Needs Services; and;

• Volunteer/Community Resource services.

Financial Services - The major public assistance programs offered are:

• Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF);

• Medicaid;

• Food Stamps;

• General Relief;

• Auxiliary Grants;

• ADC/Foster Care;

• Emergency Assistance; and;

• Refugee Assistance.

SPEAKERS BUREAU. York County officials are available to speak to civic groups on County government activities. To request a speaker, contact the Public Information Office on (757) 890-3300.  Please note, two weeks' notice is required.  

STORMWATER MANAGEMENT. The Department of Environmental & Development Services is responsible for the stormwater program in the County. The department monitors and manages the flow of stormwater to a level that should not flood, erode or cause other damage to downstream properties; deals with water quality issues to help reduce pollutants entering the waterways; and includes plan review and the erosion control program to insure development is complying with state and local requirements, including the Chesapeake Bay Regulations. STREET LIGHTS. Street lights are installed and maintained by Dominion Virginia Power. An individual or group can request installation of a light by calling the York County Department of Environmental & Development Services.  Telephone - (757) 890-3531.
