SAFETY
TOWN. A Countywide community-based project designed to introduce and
teach young children various aspects of life safety. Operated each summer
for 4-5 year olds that will attend kindergarten in the fall. Telephone -

SCHOOL
BOARD. The York County School
Board is an elected body of five citizens. Members serve
terms of four years. Meetings are held on, typically, the fourth Monday of
the month at 7p.m. in York Hall. They are televised live on Channel 47
and rebroadcast throughout the month.

SENIOR CENTER
OF YORK. A joint operations agreement between the County and the Peninsula Agency
on Aging (PAA) and the dedication of citizen volunteers allow this Center to
provide programming for senior citizens Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. The Center is located in Washington Square Shopping Center on George

Peninsula Agency on Aging
(PAA) offers services for senior citizens on the Peninsula. Located at

55 Alive/Mature Driving Refresher courses
are offered several times a year by York County Parks & Recreation and AARP.
Those who complete the eight hour, two day course are eligible for reduced
auto insurance rates from companies licensed to operate in Virginia. Call

Real Estate Tax
Relief. Elderly and/or handicapped
citizens who qualify can receive reductions in real estate
and mobile home taxes by filing an application with the Commissioner
of the Revenue's Office by April 1 of each year. Applications must be re-filed

SENIOR CONNECTION.
An information and referral service for concerns and issues that affect
senior citizens. A service of the Department of Community Services.

SOCIAL
SERVICES. The York-Poquoson Department of Social Services is a state supervised,
locally administered agency funded with federal, state and local money. The major service
programs offered are: Intake Services, Child Protective Services, Adult Protective
Services, Family Services, Foster Care and Adoption Services,
Custody Related Services such as parental evaluations
and mediation services. Employment Services,
Counseling, Day Care, Emergency Needs Services and Volunteer/Community

STORMWATER MANAGEMENT. The Department of Environmental & Development
Services is responsible for the stormwater program in the County. The
department monitors and manages the flow of stormwater to a level that
should not flood, erode or cause other damage to downstream properties;
deals with water quality issues to help reduce pollutants entering the
waterways; and includes plan review and the erosion control program to
insure development is complying with state and local requirements, including
