4-H COMMUNITY CLUBS. The
4-H Program is open to all youth ages 5-19 and is offered by Virginia
Cooperative Extension, York County. Volunteers are welcome. Clubs include:

Environmental Sciences and Small Animal Club, 4-H Upper County Club, Peer Teacher Program, and a

4-H/D.A.R.E. LEADERSHIP CAMP.
The Leadership Camp is a 3-day residential summer camping experience
that teaches youth leadership development skills. The camp is open to
students in grades 7 through 9. Youth are supervised by Extension
staff and trained adult and teen counselors, but function as self-guided
leadership teams. This camp is held as a partnership between the
Extension office and the York-Poquoson D.A.R.E. office. This camp is
held at the Jamestown 4-H Educational Center and preregistration is

A weeklong

FIRE &
RESCUE OPERATIONS. Responsible for minimizing the
losses caused by fire, injury, illness and natural or man-made disasters. It performs its
tasks through the emergency response and delivery of fire suppression, emergency medical,
rescue and hazardous materials response services; the non-emergency delivery of
fire/injury prevention and public education programs; by assisting the
Fire Prevention Division; and the provision of services at special events. This division also spends considerable
time in preparedness activities through training programs.

FIRE PREVENTION.
Responsible for reducing the loss caused by injury, illness, fire and
natural or man-made disasters through public education, the exposure of fire
and life safety hazards, the development, implementation and enforcement of
the state and local fire and life safety codes, and the investigation of
arson and fires of unknown and suspicious origin. Reviews new construction
plans and inspects businesses and new construction for compliance with the
Fire Code. The division also coordinates activities involving hazardous
materials response. It is also responsible for the development and promotion
of fire prevention and life safety behaviors. These behaviors are introduced
through specialized educational programs such as Safety Town for
preschoolers and the Risk Watch program for school children. A division of the

available with private insurance carriers under the National Flood Insurance Program.
Flood zones are areas which would likely be flooded in the "100 year flood," the
storm with a 1:100 (%) chance of occurring in any given year. New buildings in flood zones
must have first floors at least above the flood elevation, which ranges from 7.5 to 12
