AUTHOR WALTER MOSLEY TO SPEAK


Author Mosley to speak at Ferguson Center on October 28.Walter Mosley, the highly acclaimed mystery writer, novelist and social commentator, will speak at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at Christopher Newport University's Ferguson Center for the Arts.  His appearance is free to the public, but tickets are required.

Best known for his mysteries involving private investigator Easy Rawlins and his first novel, Devil in a Blue Dress, Mosley's essays, nonfiction and short fiction depict the black experience and examine ways in which the African-American perspective can contribute to political, economic and social progress in America.  Mosley will speak on his life and writings under the title, The Literary Life.

Free tickets for the author talk, question-and-answer session and book-signing are available  beginning September 15 at the sponsoring libraries of the Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium (VPLC), which consists of the public libraries of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and York County and the academic libraries of Christopher Newport University, Hampton University and Thomas Nelson Community College.

Tickets will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis and limited to two per person while supplies last.  Open seating at the event, to be held in the Ferguson Center's Music and Theatre Hall, is limited, and attendees are advised to arrive early.  Ticket holders will be seated first.  Any remaining seats will then be open to the general public.

The York County Public Library is a member of the Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium.The Mosley event is the second major free author event presented by the Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium, which allowed more than 900 people to hear the bestselling author Amy Tan for free at the Ferguson Center for the Arts on September 11, 2007.

In addition this year, the libraries of the VPLC will be offering screenings and book and film discussions about Mosley's work in the months leading up to his appearance.  All associated programs are free and open to the public.

Hampton Public Library
Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned film screening and book discussion, 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 18, Children's Programming Room, 4207 Victoria Blvd., Hampton.  Charles E. Wilson Jr., Dean of University College at Old Dominion University, will lead the discussion of the book and film.  Wilson is author of Walter Mosley: A Critical Companion, the only book-length study of Mosley's fiction.  Free and open to the public.  Registration is required.  Call 757-727-1312.  Light refreshments will be provided.

Christopher Newport University
Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned film screening and panel discussion, 4 p.m., Thursday, September 18, Trible Library, Room 209, 1 University Place, Newport News.  Panel discussion to follow screening.  Free and open to the public.  No registration is required.

Newport News Public Library System
Devil in a Blue Dress film screening and book discussion, 1-4:30 p.m., Saturday, September 27, Main Street Library Community Meeting Room, 110 Main Street, Newport News.  Film Screening, 1-3 p.m.; discussion of the book and film, 3-4:30 p.m.  Charles E. Wilson Jr., Dean of University College at Old Dominion University, will lead the discussion of the book and film.  Wilson is author of Walter Mosley: A Critical Companion, the only book-length study of Mosley's fiction.  Free and open to the public, and no registration is required.

Poquoson Public Library
RL's Dream book discussion, 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 1, Poquoson Public Library Meeting Room, 500 City Hall Avenue, Poquoson.  Patricia Hopkins, assistant professor in English at Christopher Newport University, will lead the discussion of the book.  Free and open to the public.  Reservations are preferred through the Circulation Desk, 757-868-3060.  Coffee, tea and light refreshments will be provided.

York County Public Library
Devil in a Blue Dress film screening and book discussion, 6 p.m., Thursday, October 2, Tabb Library Meeting Room, 100 Long Green Blvd., Yorktown.  Film screening, 6 p.m.; discussion of the book and film, 7:45 p.m.  John Nichols, director of film studies and associate professor in English at Christopher Newport University, will lead the discussion of the book and film.  Free and open to the public.  No registration is required.

Hampton University
Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned panel discussion, 2-4 p.m., film screening, 5 p.m., Thursday, October 9, Harvey Library Meeting Room, 130 E. Tyler St., Hampton.  Hampton University's Paula Barnes, associate professor in English; Shonda Buchanan, assistant professor in English; Lloren A. Foster, assistant professor in English; and Old Dominion University's Charles E. Wilson, dean of University College, will participate in the panel discussion.  Free and open to the public.  No registration is required.

Thomas Nelson Community College
Morality and Violence: The Action in Walter Mosley's Novels, 5 p.m., Tuesday, October 21, TNCC library gallery, Wythe Hall, 99 Thomas Nelson Dr., Hampton.  A panel discussion of the morality and violence theme in several of Mosley's novels will be presented by Thomas Nelson Community College's Jacqueline Blackwell, assistant professor in English; Hollis Pruitt, assistant professor in English; Lisa Ray, assistant professor in English; Heath Scott, assistant professor in English; and Hampton University's Valerie Prince, professor in English.  Free and open to the public. No registration is required.
