Walter
Mosley, the highly acclaimed mystery writer, novelist and social
commentator, will speak at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at
Christopher Newport University's Ferguson Center for the Arts. His
appearance is free to the public, but tickets are required.
Best known for his mysteries involving
private investigator Easy Rawlins and his first novel, Devil in a
Blue Dress, Mosley's essays, nonfiction and short fiction depict the
black experience and examine ways in which the African-American
perspective can contribute to political, economic and social progress in
America. Mosley will speak on his life and writings under the
title, The Literary Life.
Free tickets for the author talk,
question-and-answer session and book-signing are available
beginning September 15 at the sponsoring libraries of the
Virginia
Peninsula Literary Consortium (VPLC), which consists of the public
libraries of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and York County and the
academic libraries of Christopher Newport University, Hampton University
and Thomas Nelson Community College.
Tickets will be provided on a first-come,
first-served basis and limited to two per person while supplies last.
Open seating at the event, to be held in the Ferguson Center's Music and
Theatre Hall, is limited, and attendees are advised to arrive early.
Ticket holders will be seated first. Any remaining seats will then
be open to the general public.
The
Mosley event is the second major free author event presented by the
Virginia Peninsula Literary Consortium, which allowed more than 900
people to hear the bestselling author Amy Tan for free at the Ferguson
Center for the Arts on September 11, 2007.
In addition this year, the libraries of the
VPLC will be offering screenings and book and film discussions about
Mosley's work in the months leading up to his appearance. All
associated programs are free and open to the public.
