What is Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?
A process that allows libraries to borrow materials for patrons from
other libraries.
What can be requested?
Books, photocopies and sometimes microfilm. New items and Audio/Visual
items can’t be ordered.
How do I go about requesting
an Interlibrary Loan? Ask at the Reference Desk for the ILL form or
download the ILL form. Turn in the
completed form at the Reference Desk or fax the form to (757) 890-2956. This service is
available to York County residents who have a York County Library Card.
Non-residents must use the library in the city or county where they reside.
How long does it take?
At least a week or more. The ILL process is involved:
-
A computer search to locate
libraries that have the item.
-
A request to borrow the item is
sent to the first library in a string of five. If the first
library can't provide the material, the request is then sent to the next
library.
-
When the item arrives, it is
checked in and a book sleeve with the patron's name, phone number, due
date and any special instructions is attached. This sleeve must
remain on the item!
-
The item is then sent to the pickup
location.
Is there a charge?
Not by the York County Library. However, some libraries do have a fee
for loaning materials. We ask to be notified of any fees before the
material is sent. If the patron is willing to pay, we ask that the material
be sent.
What is the loan period for
an Interlibrary Loan? The loan period is determined by the lending library.
Can I renew an Interlibrary
Loan? Maybe. It is up to the lending library. We need to be notified at
least a week before the item is due so that we can send a renewal request.
You will be notified of the new due date, if the renewal is approved. If
not, the item is due by the original date.
How many items can be
requested? Up to 5 items at a time.
