WHAT BOOK GOT YOU HOOKED CONTEST!

What book got you hooked on reading?Do you remember your favorite children's book?  The one that got you hooded on reading?  The Youth Services Department wants to know!  From May 5-16, adults (18 years and up) may visit the Youth Services desk at the Library and fill out an entry form telling us your favorite children's book and why.  Winners will be notified the week of May 28th and will receive a gift certificate.  Only one entry per person.  For more information call 890-5110.

Step Up to the Plate @ your libraryThe York County Public Library joins the American Library Association and the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in inviting people of all ages to Step Up to the Plate @ your library.  This year's program includes a special Take Me Out to the Ball Game theme in honor of the 100th anniversary of the song. ...continued

NETLIBRARY EBOOK OF THE MONTH

George Soros, the legendary financier, philanthropist and bestselling author, has written a new book on the current financial crisis that will be available as the NetLibrary eBook of the Month selection for May.  In The New Paradigm for Financial Markets: The Credit Crisis of 2008 and What It Means, Soros places the current crisis in the context of decades of study of how individuals and institutions handle the boom and bust cycles that now dominate global economic activity.

AUTHOR WALTER MOSLEY TO SPEAK OCTOBER 28

Walter Mosley, the highly acclaimed mystery writer, novelist and social commentator, will speak at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at Christopher Newport University's Ferguson Center for the Arts.  His appearance is free to the public, but tickets are required. ...continued

ADULT SUMMER READING PROGRAM

The 2008 Adult Summer Reading Program begins June 22 and continues through August 2.  Blast off into Summer Reading and Let Your Mind Explore the Expanses of Literature! is the theme of this summer's program.  More info coming soon.

MAY IS ASIAN/PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month is a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States.  This commemoration originated in 1978 when a joint congressional resolution established Asian Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1992 a law was passed officially Asian Heritage Month, illustration by Bob Goode, AFNEWS/NSPDdesignating the entire month of May each year as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.

Visit the Library of Congress web site to learn more about how the contributions of Asian/Pacific Americans have helped make America a strong and free society.  Highlights include: the Chinese in California between 1850 and 1925, Yo-Yo Ma, and the Veterans History Project.  A PDF document titled Asian Reflections on the American Landscape is available on the National Park Service web site.  This document introduces Asian cultural heritage in the United States and describes historic properties related to Asian cultural heritage.

ROSETTA STONE ONLINE DISCONTINUED AFTER JUNE 30TH

Rosetta Stone has notified the Library that Rosetta Stone Online will no longer be available to public libraries when their current subscription expires.  Hence, the York County Public Library will not be able to provide access to Rosetta Stone Online after our subscription expires on June 30, 2008.  The Library is searching for a replacement product.
