Q:  Why does a fire engine come to my house when I call for an ambulance?

A:  There are several reasons why an engine company may respond to a medical call. First, it is important to remember that all career firefighters in York County are all cross-trained to the level of EMT as a minimum. Many are also paramedics. Serious medical situations may require the application of multiple procedures. The addition of the engine company personnel speeds the process as well as reducing the time it takes the patient to reach the hospital. In some cases, the closest ambulance may be assisting another victim and the engine goes first to stabilize the patient while awaiting the nearest ambulance.

Q:  Is York County a paid or volunteer department?

A:  Both. York County has a career (or paid) staff as well as volunteer personnel. All six neighborhood fire stations are staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by the career staff. The volunteer members supplement the career manpower in the stations and help with special events and other duties.

Q: How do I get a fire extinguisher refilled?

A: York County does not fill extinguishers; if needed, this may be done through a private fire extinguisher service (consult the yellow pages for more information). Most home fire extinguishers are not refillable. If in doubt, please consult a fire extinguisher service or bring it to a fire station for more information.

Q: Where do I find a good fire extinguisher and what kind should I get?

A: Most fire extinguisher manufacturers have models listed for various household uses. Most are advertised as "kitchen", "garage" or multipurpose. Look for extinguishers that carry the Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL) listing.

Most commonly available home fire extinguishers are suitable for household use. The extinguisher should have a rating in letters, such as "ABC" or "BC". The letters represent the type of fire that the extinguisher is intended to combat. "A" is for common household items such as wood or paper. "B" is for flammable liquids, such as oil. "C" is for plugged in appliances, such as TV or toaster. These letters may be accompanied by numbers such as "2A; 10BC". The numbers represent the amount of fire that the device is intended to extinguish. Thus, the higher the number the more fire it may put out.

Most extinguishers advertised for home use are acceptable and are readily available. They may be found at hardware stores and home improvement stores and mass merchandisers.

Q: How do I get my blood pressure checked at my neighborhood fire station?

A: Simply go the nearest fire station and let the personnel know that you would like your blood pressure checked. They will provide this service to you at no charge.

Q: I have just moved to York County and my insurance company wants information. They want to know the distance to the closest station and if it is staffed around the clock.

A: All six York County Fire Stations are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. For the closest fire station, please click here,  Fire and Rescue Service Areas. If you need further help please call 890-3600 Monday through Friday from 8:15 A.M. until 5 P.M..

Q: How could I arrange for a fire extinguisher class?

A: These classes are available upon request and may be scheduled by calling the fire and life safety educator at 890-3600 Monday through Friday from 8:15 A.M. until 5 P.M..

Small groups, especially those with children are encouraged to call the fire and life safety educator at 890-3600 Monday through Friday 8:15 A.M. until 5 P.M.. This will allow for a visit to be scheduled with handouts and "goodies" for the children.
