IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT 9-1-1

AND REPORTING EMERGENCIES

When dialing 9-1-1 from a wireless phone be aware there are major differences than when dialing from your home or business wireline phone.

  1. Be familiar with your surroundings (especially if traveling outside your local/familiar area).

  2. Know your cellular phone number

  3. Know your cellular provider

  4. When dialing 9-1-1, stay on the phone until the Dispatcher says it is okay to disconnect the line.  York County provides emergency medical dispatching thereby providing life-saving instructions over the telephone for life-threatening emergencies.

As with all calls to 9-1-1, it is important to

  1. Remain calm.

  2. Be prepared to provide the dispatcher with information pertaining to your emergency, such as

- the location of the emergency

- the nature of the emergency

- your name and callback number

  1. Stay on the phone until such time as the dispatcher tells you it is okay to disconnect.

Dialing 9-1-1 from a coin phone is free.

The telephone system used in the 9-1-1 Center has a TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf) built in so callers who are deaf or hard of hearing utilizing an in-home TDD can communicate directly to the 9-1-1 Communications Center.

For more information about 9-1-1, contact the Department of Fire and Life Safety at 890-3600.
