Algonquian-speaking Indians collectively called "Powhatans"
occupied a region from below the James River north to the Potomac River
and west to the fall line (where Richmond, Fredericksburg and
Washington, DC are located). In 1607, about 14,000 Indians lived
in this area. At the time of European settlement, these
loosely-organized tribes swore a limited allegiance to Powhatan, whose
principal dwelling was just a few miles north of Gloucester.
Powhatan's daughter, Pocohontas, is well-known in Virginia's history.
