Division of Juvenile Services
Family
Counseling Services
Family Counseling Services (FCS), formerly
Functional Family Therapy (FFT), remains funded in part by
the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) providing
short-term family counseling services to youth age 11-13
petitioned before the 9th District Court. In meeting
the growing need for counseling services to youth age 14-17
and their families, FCS has evolved to serve as a compliment
and aftercare service to those youth identified in need of
individual and/or family counseling services by
Psychological & Substance Abuse Services (PSAS). In
October 2006, FCS was awarded a Williamsburg Community
Health Foundation grant in order to achieve this goal.
Through on-going
collaboration with PSAS, FCS will serve as a continuum of
care in providing immediate services to at-risk youth and
their families.
The FCS program will serve youth in several capacities for
PSAS based on the timing and identified need of the
referral. Upon receipt of a referral from the Courts,
the Court Service Unit or other substance abuse agencies,
PSAS will provide a comprehensive evaluation and assessment
that will determine the level of care and make appropriate
recommendations for services.
When referrals are received
following the completion of the initial assessment, FCS will
serve as an early prevention/intervention service. For
those youth identified in need of individual and/or family
counseling during and/or after their participation in the
substance abuse educational group, FCS will serve as an
aftercare service. Within each approach, youth and
their family will receive short-term (3-6 months) counseling
services that will address means to strengthen family
relationships, communication, and parenting skills.
Relapse prevention will also be addressed with appropriate
referrals made to community agencies when deemed necessary.
