CONTROL
Sec. 4-74.
Confinement or destruction of animal which has bitten person.
(a) The owner or keeper of any animal
that has bitten any person shall immediately confine it in a substantial and satisfactory
enclosure, meeting the approval of the health director, and he shall forthwith notify the
animal control officer or the health officer, giving the name and address of the person bitten, if
known to him, and the location of the confined animal. Such animal shall be quarantined
under the observation of the health officer and the animal
control officer for a period of ten (10)
days, unless the animal develops active symptoms of rabies or expires before that time,
during which time of confinement it shall not be permitted to leave the enclosure. At the
end of such quarantine period, the animal control
officer may permit the animal to be released from
confinement if, in his opinion, it is not vicious, provided the court has not ruled upon
the question to the contrary.
(b) Notwithstanding the above provisions, a seriously injured or sick
animal may be humanely euthanized by one of the methods approved by the state veterinarian
and its head sent to the Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services of the Department of
General Services or the local health department for evaluation.
