CONCEALED HANDGUN PERMIT
VIRGINIA CODE § 18.2-308
APPLICATION: Residents of York County and the City of Poquoson who are
over the age of 21 may apply for a concealed handgun permit by
completing an
application
obtained from the York County Circuit Court Clerk's Office. The
completed application must be signed under oath in the presence of a
notary public, or the clerk or deputy clerk of the Circuit Court.
Non-resident concealed handgun permit applications are filed with the
Virginia State Police.
FEE
(Non-refundable): Application for new permit $50.00; Application to
renew existing permit $26.00. Checks payable to the York County - Poquoson
Circuit Court and MasterCard and VISA are accepted.
PROOF OF
COMPETENCY: Proof of competency to carry a handgun is required.
FINGERPRINTS
AND CRIMINAL HISTORY: York County and the City of Poquoson have local
ordinances requiring fingerprinting of applicants for new permits and a criminal
record search by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After the
application has been reviewed by the Circuit Court Clerk, fingerprints of applicants,
if required, are
made at the York County Sheriff's Office Control Room, located in the
basement of the Courthouse, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday.
ISSUANCE: The
concealed handgun permit is issued within 45 days of the date the complete
application is submitted to the Clerk for processing. If after the
permit is issued, the criminal record search reveals that the applicant is
disqualified, the permit is subject to revocation.
LOST PERMITS:
There is a $10.00 fee to replace a lost or worn permit.
RENEWAL:
Applications for permit renewal should be submitted at least 45 days prior
to expiration of the current permit.
