RESEARCH AND HOMEWORK RESOURCES

Online reference resources offer access to magazines, newspapers, journals and reference books. Some of the articles are full-text, while others may be an abstract or summary of the article. Some resources provide reference information - facts, statistics or general information about a subject.

Online reference resources are available for use by York County Public Library card holders. Some may require your library card number. Use the number located under the barcode on the back of your card without spaces. Resources identified with (in-library only) may only be accessed on the public computers located at your Library.

Search current and archived issues for thousands of titles. Find events, people, government, sports and more with the largest collection of full-text U.S. newspapers. Includes staff-written articles, obituaries, editorials, announcements, real estate and other sections.

Ancestry Library  (in-library only)
Genealogy collection includes census, vital, church, court and immigration records for the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as record collections from Canada, Europe and Australia.

The Daily Press Archive
Search the archives of The Daily Press. Browse today's news or search for stories, obituaries, sports, real estate and more.

Dictionary of Literary Biography Complete Online
Provides more than 16,000 biographical and critical essays on the lives, works and careers of the world's most influential literary figures from all eras and genres.

eLibrary (through Find It Virginia)
Provides reliable digital content designed to support K-12 research and study. Students can search more than 2,000 full-text magazines, scholarly journals, newspapers, books and television/radio transcripts—plus thousands of maps, pictures, web links and audio/video files. Includes the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Roanoke Times & World News, Washington Post, Washington Times and many more. NOTE: eLibrary is accessed via the Find It Virginia Web page. Under "Additional Resources," choose "Middle School" for the link to eLibrary.

Collection of free family history, family tree and genealogy records and resources.

Find It Virginia
A collection of databases that provide access to resources such as newspapers, magazine and journal articles, television and radio transcripts, health information, business and company resources and encyclopedias. Materials are available for all age ranges and interests.

Genealogy collection includes the 1790-1930 U.S. Federal Census, Revolutionary War Era Pension Records, Genealogy & Local History book collection, the Periodical Source Index, Freedman's Bank Records and LexisNexis U.S. Serial Set.

Homework Help from Literati Public
Designed to help students in grades 3-12 in reading, writing and math, Homework Help pairs a student and state-certified teacher in an online virtual classroom. Tutoring is offered Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. EST and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. EST. There are currently no hours on Fridays or Sundays. The Homework Help link is located on the right-hand side of the Literati Public Web page.

InfoTrac Junior Edition (also available through Find It Virginia)
Designed for students in junior high and middle school, with magazines, newspapers and reference books for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more.

InfoTrac Student Edition 9-12 (through Find It Virginia)
Designed for high school students with access to a variety of indexed and full-text magazines, newspapers and reference books. It features content from 14 reference books, including Asimov's Chronology of Science & Discovery, The Columbia Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia of American Facts and Dates and the World Almanac and Book of Facts.

Designed for elementary school students with age appropriate access to magazine, newspaper and reference content for information on current events, the arts, science, health, people, government, history and more. It features a subject-based topic tree search.

LearningExpress Library
LearningExpress Library is an interactive online learning platform of practice tests and tutorial courses designed to help patrons of all ages succeed on academic or licensing tests. When setting up your account, your username must be your library card number.

LexisNexis Total Research System (in-library only)
Access legal data including cases, statues, analytical content, Shepard's, news and business information. This research tool is available on the public computers at the Tabb and Yorktown Libraries.

Literati Public
Includes educational content for K-12 students and adults, informational videos and tutorials, eBooks on every major subject, interactive discovery tools and live homework help.

Literature Criticism Online
Includes access to centuries of critiques on authors across regions, eras and genres. This series includes Contemporary Literary Criticism, Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism, Nineteenth-Century Literature Criticism, Shakespearean Criticism, Literature Criticism from 1400 to 1800, Classical and Medieval Literature Criticism, Poetry Criticism, Short Story Criticism, Drama Criticism and Children's Literature Review.

Updated daily, this comprehensive resource offers current and archived full-text articles from local and regional newspapers (Daily Press, Richmond Times-Dispatch, The Roanoke Times, The Virginian-Pilot and more) and newspapers from all 50 states and the world.

ProQuest
ProQuest Discovery provides detailed information on popular topics including the arts, business, education, literature, politics and psychology, as well as hundreds of popular and children's titles. This periodical database includes over 3,250 titles, with more than 2,250 in full text.

Rocket Languages
This online language learning system offers 10 languages with downloadable or streaming audio tracks, grammar and culture lessons, interactive quizzes and a vocabulary game. Languages include Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Sign Language and Spanish. English for Spanish speakers is also available.

Something About the Author Online
This Gale reference set examines the lives and works of authors and illustrators for children and young adults.
