Life safety is the primary focus of today's fire and life safety departments. The Prevention and Community Safety Division is responsible for public fire and life safety education, fire inspections, fire investigations, and as well as conducting plans reviews and inspections for compliance with the life safety aspects of the building code.

The Prevention and Community Safety Division regularly conducts a program entitled “Tools to Prevent Tragedies” Campus and Student Fire Safety for graduating seniors and their parents in each of York County’s high schools near the conclusion of the school year. The program includes presentations and literature to help highten the awareness of potential college students and their parents.
