Friends Book Sale May 17-19 at Tabb Library

The Friends of the York County Public Library invite you to their Spring Book Sale May 17-19 in the Tabb Library meeting room. On Friday, May 17, the sale is open from 3-7 p.m. for members of the York County Friends of the Library. New members are welcome to join at the door. The sale is open to the general public from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, May 19. You'll find a large variety of books and multimedia for the whole family including a large collection of music and movies of India; foreign language books and media; and the last of our VHS tapes.

 
Free Writers' Workshops @ Your Library

The Library will be hosting three writers' workshops at the Tabb Library in June. The workshops are free, but registration is required. Register via the Event Calendar or by calling 757-890-5120.

Dr. Robert Arnett will present an Introduction to Screenwriting from 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 1. Dr. Arnett, an Associate Professor in Old Dominion University's Department of Communication and Theatre Arts, will discuss what screenwriters do and how to get started as a budding screenwriter.

W. Michael Farmer will present Finding Yellow Boy from 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 15. His talk will focus on how writing fiction gets to the truth behind historical facts and the opportunities and hurdles of publishing in the early years of the 21st century. Farmer's first novel in the Vanishing Trilogy, Hombrecito's War, won a Western Writers of America Silver Spur Award for Best First Novel in 2006 and was a New Mexico Book Award Finalist for Historical Fiction in 2007. The sequel, Hombrecito's Search, was released in July 2007. Tiger Tiger Burning Bright: The Betrayals of Pancho Villa, released in December 2011, completed the trilogy.

Narielle Living, author of the mysteries Signs of the South and Past Unfinished, will present Editing Your Writing from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, June 29.

 
Anne Busé Featured Speaker on May 28

The Yorktown Book Club is pleased to announce that Anne Busé will speak during its meeting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28. Busé is the owner of Blue Crab Books, a used bookstore on George Washington Memorial Highway in York County. She is a Tidewater native who has spent the past 25 years in various roles as a hospital and high school librarian and now serves as a college reference librarian. Ms. Busé will discuss the used book business, online book sales, ereaders and the future of books. The public is invited to attend. Please call the Yorktown Library at 890-5207 to reserve your seat. The group will also discuss their May book selection, So Many Books, So Little Time: A Year of Passionate Reading by Sara Nelson.

 
Create the Life You Want—Adult Education Programs at the Tabb Library

The Tabb Library is hosting a series of five adult education programs, Create the Life You Want, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month through October. Online registration is available through the library's Event Calendar. Register for one or multiple sessions.

June 8: Energy Leadership
Learn strategies to decrease the catabolic energy and increase the anabolic energy in your life.
July 13: Blocks in Life
Learn how to identify the blocks that hold people back and how to challenge these blocks to create the life we want.
August 10: Dynamic Communications
Learn how to be an effective communicator and listener.
September 14: Problem Solving
Learn five change/conflict management approaches to get the life we want.
October 12: Time Management/Life Balance
Learn a specific strategy to create more balance and conscious use of your time.
