American Beautyberry

Come to New Quarter Park this Weekend

Dears Friends -
It's September! Time for Back to School and, at New Quarter Park, it's time to watch the abundant American Beauty Berries "purple out" on our trails (JMU alums love it!) and the leaves on the diverse trees in our old-growth forest slowly turn red, yellow, orange, and brown. Aren't fall colors wonderful? We hope you'll be visiting us soon!
Come sit outside with me on Friday, September 8, to participate in our Artifact Wash & Talk. The forecast calls for a sunny day with high temperatures in the 70s, so what could be better? Send an email to me at so I'll be sure to have enough equipment set up. You don't need to bring anything, but dress in something you don't mind getting a little wet and dirty. Do you know we've washed 70 "contexts" worth of artifacts from the 18th-century manor site at New Quarter and at the Fairfield Foundation's Center for Archaeology, Preservation, and Education (CAPE)  since November 2013? Only 16 contexts to go! What's a context? Come on Friday and find out!
Join us for a Bird Walk on Saturday, September 9, from 8-10 am. The walk will be led by Jim Corliss of the Williamsburg Bird Club. Our regular birders will be looking for birds migrating to their wintering grounds (have the osprey left for darkest Peru yet?) as well as our regular eagles, heron, flocks of goldfinches, and lots more waterfowl and song birds. New birders and out-of-town guests are always welcome. We have spare binoculars and bird guides in the office you may borrow. A road race begins at 8:30, so you might want to get here a little early and use caution around runners who will be warming up.
The 9th Annual Hare and Tortoise 8K, 5K, and Fun Run takes off of Saturday! Come out to support this fundraiser for ovarian cancer research. You can sign up here and learn more about Karene O'Hare here.
Sign up now for our Public Archaeology Dig, scheduled for September 14 and 15, at the Armistead Manor site at the center of New Quarter Park. Volunteers work with professional archaeologists and certified archaeology assistants. Sign up for one of 4 sessions, limited to 10 volunteers per session, at See details on times, etc. in the flyer, below.
Check out the attached calendar for activities through the fall!
