“What are the plans for my neighborhood?” Citizens frequently
call the
Planning Division with this question. People see a dead-end street leading
to an undeveloped tract of land near their home and wonder what can be built
there, or they may see survey markers that are often the first sign that
development is on its way.
The answer to this question and many others can be found in the
York County Comprehensive Plan. Titled
Charting
the Course to 2025, the Comprehensive Plan is the long-range plan for the
physical development of the County. For each area of the County it spells out
what kind of development – single-family residential, commercial, multi-family
residential, industrial, etc. – is considered desirable and appropriate. It also
sets forth the County’s future plans for transportation, community facilities,
the environment, housing, historic resources, and economic development. The
Code of Virginia (Section
15.2-2223) requires all cities and counties in the state to have a
comprehensive plan and to review it every five years to determine if it needs to
be revised (Section
15.2-2230).
